Want to have lots of beer, melt-in-the-mouth chocolates, delectable waffles, and lip-smacking fries? Belgium is the place where you will find all of these in abundance. And, you can bet on the fact that you won’t be alone in coming here for all this.
Belgium was one of the first nations to perfect the process of beer-brewing. At present, they have more than 1000 breweries all over the country. These breweries are among the best places to visit in Belgium for a wide majority of travellers. Complement your drinks with Belgian fries – it is a combination you are sure to relish.
Belgium might seem like a small country but it has a big hand in shaping the European way of life. If you are a history buff who has a keen interest in historical buildings and sites, then there are a lot of places to visit in Belgium. Since there is a lot to see and do, plan your Belgium trip on the basis of your interest and time in hand. Here are my absolute favourite ones: -
1. Brussels
The capital city of Belgium, Brussels is actively hosting a lot of travellers every year. In fact, it has a plethora of places to keep you amused and engaged for days. From museums to chapels to expansive mansions, there are a lot of interesting places that have made Brussels one of the best cities to visit in Belgium. The capital city is also the administrative capital of the European Union, a fact that significantly elevates its importance. The city is popular for the majestic Tintin Museum, Atomium, and several palaces. Try and stay here for a day or two to soak it all in. Above all else, don’t forget to have a mug of beer and a cup of coffee with a waffle placed on the top of your cup!
2. Bruges
There are a lot of places to see in Belgium but Bruges is a city that is not to be missed during your Belgium trip. The key attractions of this city include the Market Square, canals, Holy Saviour, Belfry Tower and the magnificent cathedrals. A traveller’s delight, I tell you!
3. Knokke-Heist
Towards Netherland’s border is a small, beautiful, and serene beach-municipality named as Knokke-Heist. If you are looking for a beach-stay to relax and enjoy the weather, then this is one of the best Belgium beaches. Apart from the serenity and water sports in the city, you can also spend some time taking a tour in the Freedom Museum that is known for describing the 2nd world war in the best way possible.
4. Ghent
It is an undeniable fact that Belgium has a lot of mesmerizing places but when we talk about cities that leave the travellers spellbound with its sheer beauty, Ghent is the first name that comes to mind. Urban legends say that this city comes to life during July when it hosts the largest outdoor cultural festival in Europe which is known as the ‘Gentse Feesten’. During this time, you will find a lot of travellers on the streets enjoying the music, food, and other street entertainment options that bring the city to life. Keep a lookout for the best travel deals to Europe; you just might get to visit Belgium at the best time possible!
5. La Roche-en-Ardenne
Located on the banks of river Ourthe about 70 km from Liege is a city named La Roche-en-Ardenne which is often overlooked by people. Please don’t commit the same mistake!
Right from the architecture to the history of this settlement, everything is lovely. If Belgium is Europe's best-kept secret then Ardenne is Belgium’s! It also has a lot of attractions including Parc Chlorophylle, museum, Ourthe and much more.
6. Rochefort
Loaded with cafes, shops, and well-crafted churches, Rochefort is one of the best places to visit in Belgium. One of the gems of Belgium is locked away in Rochefort which is the cave system which lets you explore the city in an easy manner. Walk the streets to witness the beauty and warmth that Rochefort possesses.
7. Antwerp
The second-largest city of Belgium is Antwerp. The city is famous for its art collection, museums, shopping locations and the variety of food as well as beer. If you are buying a Belgium tour package, then be very sure about the inclusion of a trip to Antwerp. This is a place that shopaholics dream of. At the same time, you can also explore the art exhibits in here; visit the Royal fine art museum to see some lovely artefacts from the ancient era.
If you have been pining to visit this wonderful country, then I hope my recommendations for the cities to visit in Belgium come in handy while planning your trip. Go make awesome travel memories!
