Port Louis Frequently Asked Questions

Port Louis, the capital city of Mauritius, is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the country. Originally found in the 18th century by the French Governor Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, this city has been named after King Louis XV. Boasting a strategic location, this city has a deepwater harbour on one side and towering mountain peaks on the other. This is also the reason why it served as a calling place for ships rounding the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) on the passage between Asia and Europe.

With approximately 200,000 inhabitants, Port Louis is not only the largest city in the country but also serves as the economic centre of Mauritius. It is also home to a number of tourist attractions, which is why it attracts a large number of tourists throughout the year. From pristine beaches to luxurious malls, awe-inspiring museums to iconic historical monuments, Port Louis has so much to offer. So, whether you are a nature lover or a thrill seeker, a history enthusiast or an art lover, this place will never disappoint you.

Best Time to Visit Port Louis

Must-Visit Places in Port Louis

Here is a list of some of the major attractions that you can include in your itinerary while planning a Port Louis city tour:

Place D’Armes

One of the most imposing boulevards in the city of Port Louis, Place D’Armes is among the jewels of Mauritian heritage. Dating back to the 18th century, this iconic landmark currently serves as a fine example of French colonial architecture. Stretching from all the way up to the Port Louis waterfront, the long pathway is lined with royal palms on each side. The major highlight is a magnificent statue of colonial governor Mahé de Labourdonnais, which is located at the quayside end of the avenue. Due to the serene atmosphere, this is one of the best places in Port Louis for early morning or late evening walks.

Blue Penny Museum

Dedicated to the history and art of Mauritius, this is one of the most awe-inspiring museums in Port Louis. Featuring a large collection of artefacts and several other things, it gives a peek into the country’s glorious past. From the first explorer to set foot on the island all the way through its successive settlers from Europe, Africa, and Asia, you can find information about everything here. Mainly, this museum consists of five different rooms, which are:

The Age of Discovery

Paul & Virginie

The Island Builders

Port Louis, a Leading City

The Postal Adventure and Engraved Memory

If you are a history enthusiast, this museum is a great option to spend a day in Port Louis.

Jummah Mosque

Formerly known as the Mosque of the Arabs, this is an artistically built shrine that was consecrated in 1852. This mosque was originally built to give Islamic people the freedom to practice their religion freely. Occupying an entire city block, Jummah Mosque currently serves as a major tourist attraction as well. The architecture of this stunning structure is an intricate mix of Islamic, Creole, and Indian architectural styles. Other than this, the mosque's design also incorporates Moorish and Mughal influences.

Aapravasi Ghat

Located on the bay of Trou Fanfaron, Aapravasi Ghat is the remnant of an immigration depot. In 1834, the British Government selected the island of Mauritius to be the first site for ‘the great experiment’ where they used free labour to replace slaves. This is the place where the first-time labour workforce from India was received. It is also believed that the majority of this island’s population arrived here through this immigration depot. This place was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006, and since then it has become a major tourist attraction.

National Botanical Garden

Officially known as the Sir Seewoosagur Botanical Garden, this is another major attraction in Port Louis. Initially, it was opened by Sir Seewoosagur, a French governor, as his private garden, but later it was opened to the public as well. Sprawling across a large area, this park is home to an amazing array of flowers and plants. Here, you can find approximately 650 different varieties of plants. Some of the major plant species include baobabs, giant water lilies, and Palmier Bouteille, along with a few with medicinal properties. For nature lovers, there is no place in Port Louis better than this.

Citadel Fort

Perched on top of a hill, this impressive heritage monument is known for offering equally stunning views of the city of Port Louis. This fort is famous for its Moorish-style architecture, which gives it an archaic appeal. For people who are fascinated by ancient architectural styles, this is a must-visit place. Originally known as the Adelaide Fort, this magnificent structure was named after the wife of William II. Later, it was renamed and got its current popular name, Citadel Fort.
