About Namchi

Namchi is a small town in Sikkim, located at a height of 1675 metres above sea level. The name of the town is made of two words, ‘Nam’ and ‘Chi’, which in the local Sikkimese language means ‘Sky’ and ‘High’, respectively. When you are out, sightseeing in Namchi, your itinerary can take you to places from where you can enjoy mesmerising views of the surrounding Rangit Valley and the Khangchendzonga Range, picturesque neighbourhoods, old monasteries, spellbinding landscapes, and much more. Explore all that this small town has to offer with cost-effectively priced Namchi tour packages from Veena World or if you’re looking for a more personalised experience, you can choose a Customised Holiday by Veena World, where you control every aspect of your holiday package!

The Experience

Sikkim was once under the rule of the Chogyals who used to reign over Ladakh as well. According to some local legends, there was a Sikkimese Princess, Pende Ongmoo, who deceived one of the Chogyals and escaped. It is believed that Namchi was the place where the people of Sikkim finally caught up with the princess and where she was killed for her treason. Despite the dark associations of the past, the town of Namchi is known as a land of celebrations today. An annual flower show in February that showcases rare orchid collections, the ‘Gold Cup’ football tournament at Baichung stadium, and the Namchi Festival for cultural and food tourism, are just some of the events visitors can look forward to.

Best Places for Sightseeing in Namchi

Whether you are planning a family vacation or a solo trip, your Namchi sightseeing itinerary should definitely include the many hidden gems the town has to offer to tourists. Some of the top places for sightseeing in Namchi that you can consider visiting, include:

  • Samdruptse Hill: Located close to the town is the Samdruptse Hill, rising 2134 metres above sea level. This hill is known as the ‘wish fulfilling hill’ and is noticeable from miles away, as it houses a huge, 45-metre-high statue of Guru Rimpoche, also known as Lord Padmasambhava. The statue is painted in shining copper and is sitting upon a lotus plinth. The stone for this statue was laid by the Dalai Lama in 1997 and to date, it is believed that the hill houses an opening of a dormant volcano that has been held back by prayers from erupting.
  • Tendong Hill: Any trip or sightseeing tour of Namchi will be incomplete without a trek to Tendong Hill. The name of the hill means ‘an upright horn’ in the local language as it stands tall, towering above the town of Damthang. Tendong Hill is a treasure trove of natural vistas and mesmerising panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys, and a must-visit when on a sightseeing tour of Namchi.
  • Siddheshwar Dham: Spread over a huge area, Siddheshwar Dham is definitely a place you should visit. Built as a pilgrimage complex on top of Solophok Hill, the place is popularly known as Chardham, owing to the fact that it houses replicas of the four holy dhams of the Hindus – Badrinath, Puri, Dwarka, and Rameshwaram. At the centre, you will find a huge statue of Lord Shiva in a temple that showcases murals depicting his life. A statue of Nandi, Kirateshwar (the hunter incarnation of Lord Shiva), and replicas of the 12 Jyotirlingas surround the temple as well.
  • Ngadak Monastery: Built in the 17th century during the reign of Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal, this is one of the oldest monasteries in India. Beautifully showcasing the old architectural style of Sikkim, the Ngadak Monastery earlier used to be the palace of Pende Ongmoo. She was murdered by the followers of Chador Namgyal, the Chogyal she overthrew, after which, her palace was turned into a monastery. Because of its dark history, even today, the place is believed to be haunted by the princess’s spirit.
  • Namchi Rock Garden: This tranquil, serene spot is located somewhere between Samdruptse Hill and Namchi Town, and is an amazing place for nature, wildlife, and adventure lovers. You can feel the peaceful ambience in the lap of nature, as you will hear only the calls of the birds and cicadas at the Namchi Rock Garden. The garden also houses a variety of local plants, flowers, and trees, as well as a playground and several water bodies. You can take the ropeway that connects the PWD Guest House, Samdruptse Hill, and Namchi Rock Garden, which in itself is quite an experience as well, offering you unique views of the Khangchendzonga Range, Samdruptse Hill, and the surrounding areas.

Best Time to Visit Namchi

September to November mark the beginning of the winter season, when the temperatures have not dropped too low, and can be a good time to plan your Namchi tour. The monsoons start in July and go on till about September and are known for heavy rains.
