Trekking to Kheerganga – A Detailed Travel Guide

8 mins. read

Trekking is one of the most popular recreational activities in Himachal Pradesh, attracting visitors in heavy numbers each year. Kheerganga is a hidden gem in the state, a heavenly place for nature lovers and adventure freaks. This beautiful place offers some of the most thrilling treks that will take you through natural hot springs, lush and picturesque forests, and quaint villages. Situated in the Parvati Valley, the Kheerganga trek takes visitors through beautiful routes.

One of the offbeat places in Himachal, Kheerganga, got its name after the white milky Parvati River running through the valley. It is said that Lord Shiva had meditated here for around 10,000 years, making it a holy place. Since this place is said to be the home of Lord Shiva and is regarded as a spiritual location, you can find many old temples devoted to Lord Shiv here. The trek is snuggled in the laps of nature, having an easy to moderate slope, offering trekkers some real adventure different from other routes of Himalayan treks. Here’s more about trekking to Kheerganga.

Trekking Routes to Kheerganga

Tosh to Kheerganga

The trek begins from Barshaini after Kasol. So, you have to walk from Tosh to Barshaini, a quaint village, where you can start trekking to the forest. The route is filled with striking sights of the mountains and is the favourite stop for photography lovers. You have to cross the Nakthan village and the Rudra Nag temple. These are places to take short breaks or spend the night in basic tented accommodations on the way. The Kheerganga trek distance is around 12-13 Kms and the trekking level is low to medium, with a few difficult stretches.

Kalga – Pulga Village

It is the second route to Kheerganga, which is easier. The route is mostly preferred by those with low stamina as they can easily and quickly reach Kheerganga via Kalga – Pulga village. Here, you can take a short break and capture some pictures. However, it is possible for beginners to lose their way to the trekking path as this route passes through some dense forests. Thus, it is recommended to hire a guide or opt for the common route.

Kheerganga to Barshaini to Bhuntar

The descent should take around 3-4 hours. On your way, you will find a small Shiva temple and a pool with water from a hot spring called Parvati Kund. You will experience one of the most beautiful journeys as the route is covered with gushing waterfalls, pine forests, mountains, and sights you have not seen earlier. You can start the back journey to Barsheni and take a bus to Bhunter from Barsheni.

Cafes near Kheerganga

On both routes, there are many cafes and dhabas for refreshments. Like many places in Himachal Pradesh, Kheerganga also has a variety of café setups to entertain the passing travellers. You can find reasonably priced good quality food options, ranging from local Himachali cuisines to Chinese and other Indian foods. When visiting these roadside cafes, you must try their hot drinks, such as coffee, tea, and soups.
