3 mins. read
In this blog, we will be exploring one super interesting topic: The Eight Thousanders! So today let’s embark on this expedition.
Let’s first start with what the Eight Thousanders actually are.
The "8000s" are the 14 mountains in the world that are over 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) tall. These mountains, also known as the "eight-thousanders," are the highest peaks in the world and are all located in the Himalayas and Karakoram mountain ranges in Asia. The 14 8000s are:
  1. Mount Everest: 8,848 meters (29,029 feet)
  2. K2: 8,611 meters (28,251 feet)
  3. Kangchenjunga: 8,586 meters (28,169 feet)
  4. Lhotse: 8,516 meters (27,940 feet)
  5. Makalu: 8,485 meters (27,838 feet)
  6. Cho Oyu: 8,188 meters (26,864 feet)
  7. Dhaulagiri: 8,167 meters (26,795 feet)
  8. Manaslu: 8,163 meters (26,781 feet)
  9. Nanga Parbat: 8,126 meters (26,660 feet)
  10. Annapurna: 8,091 meters (26,545 feet)
  11. Gasherbrum I: 8,080 meters (26,444 feet)
  12. Broad Peak: 8,051 meters (26,414 feet)
  13. Gasherbrum II: 8,035 meters (26,362 feet)
  14. Shishapangma: 8,027 meters (26,335 feet)
Yes, several climbers have set speed records for climbing the 8000s, or the 14 mountains in the world that are over 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) tall. These records are for the fastest time to summit all 14 of the 8000s. Some notable examples include:
  • In 2010, the Swiss climber Ueli Steck set a new record by climbing all 14 8000s in just 62 days.
  • In 2013, the Italian climber Hans Kammerlander set a new record by climbing all 14 8000s in just 71 days.
  • In 2014, the Spanish climber Alberto Iñurrategi set a new record by climbing all 14 8000s in just 125 days.
  • In 2017, the Slovenian climber Ales Cesen set a new record by climbing all 14 8000s in just 110 days.
  • In 2018, the Spanish climber Kilian Jornet set a new record by climbing all 14 8000s in just 118 days.
It should be noted that these records are for the fastest time to summit all 14 8000s, and do not take into account the time it takes to prepare for and acclimatize to the climbs, which can be significant. These records are also subject to verification and may not be recognized by all organizations.
Nims Dai is a Nepali mountaineer who has climbed several of the 8000s, or the 14 mountains in the world that are over 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) tall. Some notable accomplishments by Nims Dai include:
