Do you prefer visiting familiar places again and again, or do you enjoy exploring new destinations every time? Whenever I picture the Philippines, azure waters and powder-white sands come to mind. But there's so much more to this beautiful country, from a 16th-century walled city to the world's smallest primates with piercing gazes! I'm sure, like me, you've traveled to many places in Asia, but maybe the Philippines is still on your travel list!

The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,641 islands, each offering its own unique charm. Interestingly, about 534 of these islands were only officially added in 2017, bringing the total count to 7,641. Out of these islands, only 2,000 are inhabited! It's said that for an adventure enthusiast, exploring all these islands could take at least 21 years. Since we can't spend 21 years of our lives discovering the Philippines, it's important to plan your holiday just right. The islands were named after King Philip II of Spain when they were discovered by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who sailed on behalf of Spain and claimed them in Spain's name. In 1521, when Magellan arrived in the Philippines, he met resistance from Lapu-Lapu, the chieftain of Mactan Island, who refused to submit to Spanish rule or convert to Christianity. According to legend, Lapu-Lapu himself killed Magellan, marking a significant victory for the native people. Some versions of the story even suggest that Lapu-Lapu possessed supernatural powers that helped him and his warriors overcome the technologically superior Spanish forces. Today, you can see the statue of Lapu-Lapu, the national hero, in Cebu City.

Manila, the bustling capital of the Philippines, is a city that seamlessly blends the old and the new. It's actually a collection of 16 small cities. The Spanish colonial influence is evident with a visit to Intramuros, the historic walled city that dates back to the 16th century. Walking through its cobblestone streets feels like stepping back in time. Just outside Intramuros, you'll find Rizal Park, one of the largest urban parks in Asia. This green oasis is not just a place for relaxation but also a site of national importance, housing the Rizal Monument, dedicated to the national hero, Dr. José Rizal. In Manila, you'll notice that everyday transportation often involves riding in a Jeepney, adorned with painted stickers and colorful artworks. These jeepneys were originally made from U.S. military jeeps left behind after World War II!

A visit to the Philippines wouldn't be complete without exploring Cebu, known as the "Queen City of the South." This province beautifully blends history, culture, and natural beauty. Cebu is home to Magellan's Cross, a symbol of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines, planted by Ferdinand Magellan. Adjacent to Magellan's Cross is the Basilica del Santo Niño, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country. With the Philippines having the world's third-largest Christian population, it's no surprise that Christmas celebrations start early—beginning as early as September, with a nightly mass for the nine days leading up to Christmas Eve!

In Cebu, don't miss a visit to Kawasan Falls, located in the town of Badian. This multi-layered waterfall is one of the most beautiful in the country. Another must-visit is Moalboal, a charming coastal town on the southern part of Visayas Island, where you can experience the mesmerizing underwater spectacle of the Sardine Run at Panagsama Beach. With your snorkeling gear, you can immerse yourself in the crystal-clear waters to witness millions of sardines swimming in perfect synchrony just offshore—a natural phenomenon.

A ferry ride away from Cebu is the island of Bohol, known for its stunning natural attractions and unique wildlife. One of Bohol's most iconic sights is the Chocolate Hills, a series of over 1,200 perfectly conical hills that turn chocolate brown during the dry season, hence the name. Bohol is also home to the Philippine tarsier, one of the world's smallest primates. These tiny, wide-eyed creatures can be found in the Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella, where you can see them up close in a natural, protected environment. Remember to be respectful, as tarsiers are highly sensitive to light and noise. You can also enjoy a river cruise along the Loboc River, where the riverbanks are lined with palm trees, and the water is a stunning emerald green. Some cruises even feature live performances by local musicians, adding a cultural touch to the serene experience.

For a romantic escape, head to the islands of Boracay or Palawan. The crystal-clear waters here are perfect for snorkeling and diving, offering a chance to see vibrant coral reefs and a wide array of marine life.
