My Top 3 Cities outside India!

7 mins. read
Published in the Sunday Mumbai Samachar on 01 September, 2024

Travelling, to me, is like opening a treasure chest brimming with memories. Each journey, every city I’ve explored, adds another gem to my collection—priceless, unforgettable, and uniquely its own. Among the many adventures I’ve embarked upon, three cities have etched their way into my heart, shining brighter than the rest: Copenhagen, Tokyo, and Melbourne. These aren’t just destinations on a map; they are experiences that have deeply influenced my perspective on the world and its incredible diversity.

One of my favourite questions to ask my fellow Veena World tour managers is, "Which are your three favourite cities in the world?" The answers are always varied, filled with personal experiences and unique stories, much like my own love affair with these three exceptional cities. So today, let’s take a stroll through these remarkable places and explore what makes them truly unforgettable.

Copenhagen : Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is a place where medieval castles and palaces stand side by side with sleek modern architecture, and where the cobblestone streets and colourful buildings along the waterfront create a picturesque landscape that feels like it’s straight out of a storybook. One of the most striking aspects of Copenhagen is how it has embraced modern living while preserving its rich heritage. From the grand spires of Christiansborg Palace to the minimalist elegance of its new urban spaces, the city’s skyline tells the story of a place that values both its past and its future.

Perhaps one of Copenhagen’s most distinctive features is its love affair with bicycles. In a city where there are more bicycles than people, cycling isn’t just a mode of transport; it’s a way of life. Copenhagen’s extensive network of bike lanes makes it one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, and cycling is deeply ingrained in its culture.

Tivoli Gardens: No visit to Copenhagen would be complete without a trip to Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks. Opened in 1843, Tivoli is filled with thrilling rides, beautifully manicured gardens, and enchanting pavilions that transport you to another era. At night, Tivoli transforms into a magical wonderland, with twinkling lights and vibrant fireworks that illuminate the night sky, making it a must-visit for both young and old.

Nyhavn: Another iconic attraction is Nyhavn, the historic harbour district that’s synonymous with Copenhagen’s charm. Lined with brightly colored 17th-century townhouses, Nyhavn’s waterfront is a lively hub filled with cozy cafes, bustling bars, and street performers that create a festive atmosphere.

Tokyo : As soon as you step foot in Tokyo, you are met with an overwhelming sense of energy and excitement. It’s a city that buzzes with life, where towering skyscrapers and neon lights dominate the skyline, yet around every corner, you can find pockets of culture and tradition. From its ancient temples and serene gardens to its futuristic architecture and cutting-edge technology, Tokyo is a city that embraces its rich heritage while constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

My first impression of Tokyo was one of awe and wonder. The city is vast, sprawling across an immense landscape of varied neighbourhoods, each with its own unique vibe. There’s the glitzy, neon-lit streets of Shibuya, where fashion, music, and youth culture converge; the sophisticated elegance of Ginza, with its luxury boutiques and fine dining; and the quiet, old-world charm of Asakusa, where traditional Japan is beautifully preserved. Tokyo’s dynamic energy and diversity are palpable, making it a place where every corner holds the promise of a new adventure.

Shibuya Crossing: One of Tokyo’s most iconic experiences is witnessing the chaos and rhythm of Shibuya Crossing, often described as the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world. Standing at the edge of the crossing, I watched in amazement as thousands of people surged across the intersection from all directions, moving in a coordinated dance that seemed both chaotic and perfectly timed. The sea of people, the flashing lights, and the towering screens broadcasting advertisements created a scene that was almost surreal.

Shinjuku Station: Another marvel of Tokyo’s urban landscape is Shinjuku Station, the busiest train station in the world. With over 36 lakh passengers passing through daily, navigating Shinjuku Station is an experience in itself; the sheer scale of the station, with its multiple levels and endless corridors, can be overwhelming. Yet, despite the constant rush of people, everything runs like clockwork.

Melbourne : Melbourne, often referred to as Australia’s cultural capital, is a city where every street corner tells a story. Having lived in Melbourne for four years, I have had the incredible opportunity to experience the city’s unique charm first-hand.

Laneways and Street Art: One of Melbourne’s most defining features is its network of narrow laneways, which serve as canvases for some of the most dynamic street art in the world. Places like Hosier Lane have become iconic, attracting artists from all over to contribute to its ever-changing gallery of graffiti and murals.

Galleries and Museums: Beyond the laneways, Melbourne’s commitment to the arts is evident in its numerous galleries and museums. The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Australia’s oldest and most visited art museum, houses an impressive collection that spans from classical to contemporary works, offering something for every art lover.

Melbourne is world-renowned for its coffee culture, and rightly so. The city takes its coffee seriously, with countless cafes offering meticulously brewed cups that could easily rival the best in the world. The culinary scene in Melbourne is just as diverse and exciting, reflecting the city’s multicultural influences. From the aromatic spices of Indian curries to the delicate flavours of Japanese sushi, Melbourne’s food offerings are a testament to its global palate.

For those looking to venture further outdoor, the Great Ocean Road is an absolute must-see. This scenic drive along Australia’s southern coast offers breath-taking views of rugged cliffs, pristine beaches, and iconic landmarks like the Twelve Apostles. The road winds through charming seaside towns and lush rainforests, providing endless opportunities for adventure and exploration.

These cities are more than just places on a map; they are vibrant, living entities that invite you to explore, discover, and experience life from new perspectives. Each visit to these remarkable destinations has enriched my life, offering unforgettable memories and countless stories. They have taught me the beauty of our world, the joy of discovery, and the value of stepping out of one’s comfort zone to experience the world in all its glory.

So, what are your favorite cities in the world? I’d love to hear about the places that have captured your heart and inspired your own adventures. Share your travel tales with me at neil@veenaworld.com. Let’s continue to explore, dream, and discover together!
