Wishing You All a Very Happy New Year!

As I scrolled through the flood of year-end messages on our society’s WhatsApp group, I found myself doing what I often do—skimming past the forwards. But this time, one post caught my eye. It was an Instagram post shared in the group, specifically addressed to all the women.

For the past few days, there had been a lot of chatter about travelling, and this post seemed to encapsulate everything we’d been discussing. Before you wonder what I’m rambling about, let me clarify: the post was about solo travel and was penned by none other than one of the finest actors of our time, Shefali Shah.

She shared a heartfelt story about the challenges of planning a family trip—coordinating dates, finalizing destinations, and navigating the endless back-and-forth to accommodate everyone. Despite her efforts, she found herself at a crossroads when the trip seemed impossible for the whole family. Faced with the prospect of canceling everything, she confronted a moral dilemma: should she go alone or let the opportunity slip away?

To her credit—and to the delight of her readers—Shefali decided to travel solo. She poured her heart into describing the blend of guilt and joy she experienced. Her courage resonated deeply with me and, I’m sure, with everyone else who read it.

The post sparked a lively discussion in our group about the merits and challenges of traveling solo. It got me thinking: what better way to kick off the new year than by diving into this topic?

The Case for Solo Travel

The idea of travelling solo often evokes mixed feelings. For some, it’s an exhilarating prospect—a chance to explore the world on their own terms. For others, it can feel daunting, fraught with concerns about safety, logistics, and loneliness. But here’s the truth: solo travel can be one of the most enriching, empowering, and transformative experiences of your life.

I’ve been fortunate to travel alone many times, often as an extension of work trips. While the primary purpose of these journeys has been professional, those few extra days I’ve carved out for myself have turned into some of the most fascinating and enriching experiences of my life.

When I travel solo, I love immersing myself in the local vibe, whether it’s by hopping on a train or metro or renting a car with a driver. Some of the most intriguing conversations I’ve had have been with drivers from different parts of the world. They offer a unique, authentic glimpse into their country’s culture and everyday life that no guidebook can provide.

One of my most offbeat solo adventures was a trip to Tunisia. My driver there turned into an impromptu guide, unveiling hidden treasures within the bustling souk. I remember him leading me up a narrow staircase to a rooftop café with breathtaking views of Tunis city—a spot I would never have discovered on my own. He also introduced me to local delicacies, like cactus fruit from market stalls, and became my unofficial photographer, scouting the perfect backdrop for pictures—like the intricate doors that Tunisia is famous for.

More recently, I travelled to Georgia, where my driver spoke only broken English. Yet, his warmth and enthusiasm bridged any language gap. He introduced me to a locally made khachapuri, a delicious Georgian speciality, and we shared a meal together—a moment of camaraderie that transcended words.

In Switzerland, solo travel took on a different charm. I relied on the country’s impeccable train system, and during one such journey, I found myself walking to a serene lake in Lucerne. It was an experience of pure bliss—just me, the gentle ripples of the water, and the stillness of the moment. I felt a deep sense of safety and solitude, with the comforting knowledge that civilization was just a stone’s throw away whenever I wanted to rejoin it.

Each of these journeys has reaffirmed why I cherish travelling alone. The freedom to explore at my own pace, the unexpected discoveries, and the meaningful connections I’ve made along the way have left an indelible mark on my heart. Solo travel has shown me that the world is full of welcoming strangers and unforgettable experiences, waiting to be embraced.

Embracing the Solo Travel Journey

Solo travel is a unique experience that offers freedom, self-discovery, and an unparalleled sense of accomplishment. When you travel alone, you’re the architect of your journey. There’s no need to compromise on where to go, what to see, or how much time to spend at each place. Whether you prefer lingering at a cozy café, trekking through serene hills, or immersing yourself in art at a museum, solo travel lets you move at your own pace and follow your own interests.

Beyond the freedom it brings, travelling solo is also a journey inward. It pushes you to confront challenges, step out of your comfort zone, and adapt to unfamiliar situations, teaching resilience and independence along the way. It’s a rare chance to connect with yourself, away from the noise and distractions of daily life. Solo travel often fosters deeper engagement with locals and fellow travellers, leading to authentic experiences you might miss when traveling with companions. From joining a local festival to sharing stories with strangers, these interactions add a rich layer to your adventures and create memories that last a lifetime.

While solo travel is immensely rewarding, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Stay connected with family or friends by sharing your itinerary and regularly checking in. Simple precautions, like trusting your instincts and avoiding isolated areas at night, can make a big difference. Travel insurance is another must-have to cover unexpected events, ensuring peace of mind while you explore.

Choosing the right destination is another important step in solo travel. If you’re looking for wellness and rejuvenation, Rishikesh in India is ideal with its serene yoga retreats and Ayurvedic therapies. Bali, Indonesia, offers lush landscapes and world-class spas for those seeking tranquility. Nature lovers might find solace in the misty hills of Munnar, Kerala, or the picturesque white-washed streets of Santorini, Greece. For those craving adventure and camaraderie, Ladakh’s rugged terrain and New Zealand’s adrenaline-filled activities provide thrilling opportunities to make new friends and push your limits.

Solo travel doesn’t have to mean going it entirely alone, either. At Veena World, we can help make your journey seamless. We take care of all the arrangements, ensuring you experience the best of your destination without the hassle of planning. Travelling with a group on our tours provides a safety net while giving you the chance to socialize and share experiences with like-minded people.

Ultimately, solo travel isn’t just about visiting new places; it’s about discovering new parts of yourself. Whether you’re savouring the quiet of a lakeside in Switzerland, enjoying the vibrancy of a bustling souk in Tunisia, or sharing a plate of khachapuri in Georgia, every moment becomes a stepping stone to personal growth and global connection.

So, where will your solo adventure take you this year? Will it be the tranquil Himalayas, the sun-kissed beaches of Bali, or the adrenaline-filled landscapes of New Zealand? The world is waiting to be explored—by you and for you. There’s no better time to begin the journey than now.
