Best Time to Visit Vietnam - The Four Seasons of The Land of the Ascending Dragon

11 mins. read

Vietnam when understood in the local language is an amalgamation of two words. Việt, an unknown linguistic word that loosely translates to “far off” or “beyond” and Nam, a Chinese word meaning “South” - Beyond South. Though there were several other names before Vietnam was officially called Vietnam, and several other theories as to how the present name came into play, we are partial to one. When taken poetically, the work conveys an idea of a distant land in the south. A place that gives true meaning to staggering natural beauty and diverse cultural complexities.

Prologue

Located on the eastern edge of the peninsula in southeast Asia, Vietnam is a country that has recently become a favourite place for exploration. Young and ripe for tourists to tour. The country boasts some of the most breathtaking views in the world. With natural landscapes, giant mountains, clear blue waters, long coastline, beaches, modern architecture and patchworks of rice paddies dotting the countryside, this Land of the Ascending Dragon welcomes every person no matter the race, religion or culture. That too any time of the year. Yes! Vietnam has a magic to its air, that resonates within everything, anytime and every time you visit. However, depending on the places you intend to go, be it to the central coast, the north, the south or the highlands, the temperature and crowd you see will vary from season to season. Therefore, you may want to plan ahead of time and book your Vietnam tour packages well in advance.

But before you dive headfirst into the seasons and the best time to visit Vietnam, let us take a look at things to do in Vietnam. After all, the best time to visit Vietnam is nothing if you don’t know how to enjoy it at its best.

Things to do in Vietnam

Participate in the Hoi An Lantern Festival

Hoi An, a city located on the central coast of Vietnam is a melting pot of history and culture. The city has been recognised as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is a true example of different eras and styles, where wooden Chinese shophouses meet, French Colonial buildings meet Vietnamese tube houses and Japanese Pagodas. It is one of the most famous places to visit in Vietnam. And an ideal time to visit Hoi An in Vietnam is on the full moon of every month. It is when thousands of lanterns float through the sky and on the Hoai River, illuminating the city streets.

Cruise at Halong Bay

Ha Long Bay

Hạ Long Bay has recently become a popular tourist destination in Vietnam and is also a great place to set sail on luxurious cruises on crystal clear waters. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is surrounded by limestone mountains, islands, rock formations and several caves that are fun to explore around and gaze at through a ship’s deck. Though many consider the months of September through March and May the best time to go on a cruise at Halong Bay in Vietnam, you can schedule off-season as well - from May to June - for uncrowded cruise ships.

Kayaking in Ho Chi Minh City

A great option for those who want to indulge in adventurous activities, kayaking in the Saigon River is an unforgettable tour experience. Saigon River is the main river in Ho Chi Minh City, Southern Vietnam that connects with the longest delta in Asia - the Mekong Delta. Other than kayaking, the city is also famous for other activities, such as Canoeing, motorbiking, tunnel tours, shopping on the floating market etc. Though the weather in the city remains pleasant year-round, the ideal time to visit this city in Vietnam is from December to March to enjoy the most activities.

Explore Tra Que Vegetable Village

Another attraction close to the Hoi An city in the northwest, located in the Cam Ha Commune is the Tra Que Vegetable Village. A paradise for plant lovers and gardeners, Tra Que Vegetable Village is a quaint little place located off-track to help you enjoy the best of country life. Named after the sweet-scented vegetable that tastes a little like cinnamon and is used in everyday meals of the locals and the Pho Hoi people. The village is also a great place to learn to cook local cuisine, with hands-on classes. According to locals, Summer and post-Autumn - May to July and September to December - are the best time to go to Tra Que Vegetable Village in Vietnam. This is the time of fresh crop production and food fresh out of the soil.

Hike through Cat Ba Island

Located in North Vietnam, Cat Ba Island is a part of the Cat Ba National Park in Halong Bay. Trekking through the island has become a favourite activity for many tourists. Hiking through Cat Ba brings one much closer to the wonders of nature. You will pass through jungles, rest at small fishing villages, spot several animals native to Vietnam such as Cat Ba langur and much more. Not to forget that the views of the Ngu Lam Peak are going to be mindblowing and a reward in itself. The island is perfect to visit throughout the year, with summertime - from May to October - seeing a flush of tourists. But if you are enjoying the island in peace and away from the cold weather, the months from November to April will be the best time to visit this island in Vietnam from India.

Snorkelling in Cham Island

Perfect for snorkelling, kayaking, sunbathing, camping, deep diving and speed boating, Cham Island is the best place for adventure seekers and nature lovers. Situated about 20 kilometres from the mainland Hoi An, Cham Island or what locals call it Cu Lao Cham, is a UNESCO recognised World Biosphere Reserve. Despite being a Marine Protected Area, snorkelling is still a popular activity that many tourists and locals enjoy to partake in. Since the climate is cool throughout the year, with the flora and fauna doting the island, it is the perfect place to wind down and relax. However, water and adventure activities in Cham Island only last for a few months. The best time is the summer - from June to August. Since the weather is warm and sunny, it is a good time to visit Vietnam to witness colourful corals and marine life at Cham Island.

‘Tis the Season - Best Time to Go to Vietnam

A lot happens when you choose the perfect thing at the perfect time. And the same rule applies to planning a visit to Vietnam.

When it comes to choosing the best month to visit Vietnam, it all boils down to what your preferences are. This southeast gem of Asia has diverse landscapes, rich culture, and delectable cuisine. While some periods in Vietnam will be best for beach lovers to visit,  it might not be the best time for those who are on a budget. Yet, as the poets say, the sun shines when you shine. Therefore, no matter the months you plan to visit Vietnam, they are all going to be the best adventure of your life.

Spring Splendor (February to April)

As the winter chill bids adieu, Vietnam emerges as the most beautiful destination. With bursts of colours, flowers blooming in the streets, on the mountain tops. Hanoi’s blossoming streets, clear blue skies, vibrant nightlife, and the fragrant Mekong Delta create a picturesque backdrop for exploration in the cosy warm weather. It is ideal to enjoy festivals such as Tet Nguyen Dan – the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, participate in cultural traditions and savour the lip-smacking flavours of Vietnamese street food or sit outside a cosy cafe sipping on lotus tea.

Summer Adventures (May to August)

Venturing into Vietnam’s central regions during these months will be great for indulging in the tapestry of lush landscapes. While the weather is dry and humid, the thrill of adventures only begins to rise. From exploring the caves of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park to basking in the natural beauty of Ha Long Bay, or getting wet in the occasional tropical downpours will only add a refreshing twist to your journey.

Autumn Tranquility (September to November)

It is these months of the year that the weather takes a turn. Some days are for glorious sunshine, while others, insistent downpours - the October to November window in particular. In Autumn, Northern Vietnam dons a mesmerising palette of golden rice terraces, creating postcard-perfect vistas in places like Sapa. Islands and outcrops around Halong Bay. This provides a perfect setting for exploration for those seeking a reprieve.

Winter Wonder (December and January)

Winter season in Vietnam tends to be drier and cooler. While the northern regions can get downright chilly, southern Vietnam enjoys milder temperatures, making it an ideal time to explore. One can explore Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta without the sweltering heat.

Epilogue

Vietnam has a rich tapestry of culture, history, and natural beauty. Whether you seek the bustling streets of the cities or the tranquil landscapes in the countryside, Vietnam promises an adventure that will be like no other. And as the trip concludes, the kaleidoscopic experiences in Vietnam leave an imprint on the soul. Every moment is a snapshot of a culture as rich and varied as the landscape itself.
