With deep dark clouds blanketing the region, valleys coming alive with fresh springs and hills bathing in gushing waterfalls, the months between July to September are the best time to go to Gangtok for some out-of-the-box travelling experience.

However, since the city is shrouded with thick clouds and misty fog, it is important to practice caution when planning to visit during the rainy season. Some of the ideal places to visit in Gangtok during the Monsoon season include the Rumtek Monastery with lush green trees surrounding the keep; Rabangla with its huge statue of Lord Buddha - the head touching the clouds. Ruins of Rabdentse and Pemayangtse Monastery with their splendid views of the Kanchenjunga range. Enchey Monastery is perfect for those who seek solace and solitude.

After the warmth of the summer, the downpours drenching Gangtok give birth to new life. This is the best month to visit Gangtok, for the landscape promises an array of colours compiled with the greenery of its mountains.

Monsoon is also the best season for Gangtok for you can try a buffet in Gangtok restaurants. With a plateful of momos steamed to perfection, sisnoo with a fresh baked sourdough slice, the most scrumptious Thukpa topped with chopped onions, green chillies and a dash of tang, Sael Roti with potato curry warming your insides, the drizzling rain will be the most beautiful thing you see.

Winter in Gangtok lasts until the end of March. With snow blanketing most of the city, it is a picture-perfect landscape. This is the best time to plan your north Sikkim itinerary if you have a sweet spot for magical-looking mountains, chilly mornings and nights, cosying up near the fireplace as snow falls down outside your window. As the majestic Kanchenjunga range stands covered in glistening snow, the town comes alive with psychedelic lights, warm food lining the tables and wood cracking in the hearth.
